"Mentally Healthy" Young Males (Homoclites)

Abstract
I. Introduction This report is primarily an attempt to describe and explain the mental state of a special group of young adult males who seem to be "healthy." They were "discovered" fortuitously in a quest for subjects to participate in a larger program of psychosomatic research. We had turned from studies on anxious and depressed patients to subjects free from psychiatric disturbance, i.e., "normal," in order to investigate their psychosomatic processes during an "idling" phase and to observe their stress responses under conditions of psychological and physical strain. We finally found a nearby small college whose students and administration † willingly cooperated in our research. In 1958 more than half of the entire student body of George Williams College was presented with psychological tests including: Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale, Mandler's Perception of Feeling, Barron's Ego Strength Scale, and Nowlis' Adjective Check List.
