Effect of Aureomycin on the Herpes Simplex Virus in Embryonated Eggs.

Abstract
The therapeutic activity of aureomycin against the virus of herpes simplex was tested in the embryonated egg using the false air sac technique. Penicillin and inactivated aureomycin were used as controls. Aureomycin appeared to be more toxic for the chick embryo than for most other laboratory animals. Incubation of aureomycin at 56 C. for 5 days destroys the embryotoxic principle as well as its antibiotic activity. Aureomycin has no in vitro activity against herpes simplex virus. As compared with its activity against the larger viruses, no similar in vivo effect against herpes simplex virus could be demonstrated.
