Abstract
New methods have been studied for carbonizing vegetable contaminants in wool. A novel technique is described for assessing the brittleness and crushability of seeds and burrs. Thionyl chloride, applied either as a vapor or in perchloroethylene solution, is an effective carbonizing agent, and in some cases no baking step is necessary. In general, these treatments cause no marked damaged to wool (there is some increase in yellowness) as measured by various textile properties.
