Abstract
The differential equations relating the behavior of the reduced widths and eigenvalues in a nuclear reaction to an exterior potential are derived for a general multichannel reaction. A multichannel sum rule is also obtained. The developed equations show coupling of the reduced widths of a particular level and channel to that of all other levels and channels. The degree of coupling is governed by the strength of the exterior potential and the proximity of other levels. The Vogt prescription of modification of the penetration factor is then seen to be valid when the external potential is weak. Keywords
