Abstract
Established methods for adaptive and self-tuning control are looked at with the aim of providing a guide to both the methods and the fundamental principles involved. Some model reference adaptive control and explicit and implicit self-tuning methods are presented, along with their major characteristics. In addition, the similarities which exist between methods derived from widely differing concepts are also indicated. Keywords
