Abstract
The potential of various wild host species to support development of maize stalk borer, Busseola fusca (Fuller) was assessed both under laboratory and field conditions. Among the wild plant species, Pennisetum purpureum and Sorghum verticilliflorum (thick‐stemmed) were identified as the major hosts of B. fusca. In most cases these two wild host species were comparable with the main host plants in terms of development and population of the insect. This study suggests that abundance of S. verticilliflorum (thick‐stemmed) and P. purpureum could constitute a large reservoir of B. fusca. Saccharum officinarum and S. verticilliflorum (thin‐stemmed) were found to be of minor importance. Snowdenia spp. did not support development of B. fusca in the field. Keywords
