Abstract
Twelve chronic Salmonella carriers were treated with pivmecillinam. Eight out of 12 were cured. One of the cured patients underwent cholecystectomy during the treatment period and 2 were only cured when a second high dose treatment was combined with cholecystectomy. In the 4 carriers not cured by antibiotic therapy resistant Salmonella emerged, though in only one case were these resistant to mecil linam. The frequency of the emergence of antibiotic resistance and of R -factor carrying strains was similar to that obtained after administration of ampicillin. Plasmid mediated resistance against pivmecillinam was found.
