Abstract
IN a thought-provoking article appearing elsewhere in this issue of the Journal Pyrtek and Bartus report their experiences with "Clostridium Welchii Infection Complicating Biliary-Tract Surgery." Apart from the tragic nature of this complication, it raises several more general issues.Gas gangrene occurs so rarely in civilian life that it is seldom diagnosed until the patient is moribund. The acute onset, within hours of operation, of a high pulse rate, with or without a temperature rise, associated with wound pain, a mental clarity associated with terror of impending death, or restlessness, may be all that is needed to raise a suspicion . . .
