Abstract
Biological control of the intermediate hosts of S. mansoni and S. haematobium by a competitor snail, H. duryi, was suggested. In this laboratory study, the influence of H. duryi on the relationship between the parasite and the intermediate host was investigated. H. duryi behaves as a decoy if it is present when B. pfeifferi is exposed to the miracidia of S. mansoni, and the continued presence of H. duryi in the aquarium after B. pfeifferi is exposed greatly reduces cercarial production. When these 2 spp. were present in equal numbers, cercarial production was reduced by 95.9% in comparison with a control group. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
