Abstract

Changes produced in gastric secretion by a 1.5 and a 2% sol. of NaHCO3 administered 3 times daily in doses of 50 cc. by stomach tube, or a 4% sol. placed directly in the pouch were studied by use of a new technic employing the recently described Cope pouch dog. NaHCO3 produced an increase in the gastric secretory activity during hours immediately following a test meal, with a partial compensatory decrease during later hrs. The role of these factors in "rebound or "secondary" gastric acid secretion, as observed in fractional gastric analysis, is discussed.
