Abstract
Sixty-six cases of melanoma in situ were randomly selected from the files at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia, and multiple deeper sections were cut from the paraffin blocks. An invasive component (Level II) was found in eight cases, with a thickness ranging from 0.19 to 0.45 mm. No recurrences or metastases have developed after at least five years. Focal areas of regression were present in the initial sections in all but one of these eight cases.
