Abstract
In October 1991, an unusually large cohort of postgraduate students registered at the University of Sussex for a research degree (Doctorate or MPhil) in National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). This is the first such programme ever mounted at a British university. Its inception signals a significant commitment to long‐term independent research in an increasingly important area of development which has already affected the life chances of millions of men and women in the United Kingdom. NVQs Levels 1‐4 are set to transform training in industry and further education, and more recent developments (General National Vocational Qualifications–GNVQs) are about to impact on schooling. Higher‐level (Level 5) NVQs are likely to have a similar effect in higher education and the professions when they come on stream in the mid‐1990s. This paper, presented as a short case study, recounts the genesis and shape of this exciting initiative. Keywords
