Abstract
Results of occasional sampling of moss, lichen, and marine sand samples from localities throughout the British Isles are provided in table form. Forty-nine species of tardigrade are recorded, three of which, Hypsibius (Hypsibius) maculatus G. Iharos, Hypsibius (Isohypsibius) tetradactyloides (Richters), and Macrobiotus islandicus Richters, are new to the British faunal list. A new variety, Hypsibius (Isohypsibius) prosostomus (Thulin) var. cambrensis is described and figured. The status of Macrobiotus areolatus Murray, Macrobiotus harmsworthi Murray, and Macrobiotus richtersi Murray is discussed and notes on egg and adult morphology included. The protozoan symphoriont Pyxidium tardigradum Van der Land is recorded on Hypsibius (Hypsibius) oberhaeuseri (Doy`ere) and Milnesium tardigradum Doy`ere living in moss and lichen. Observations are made on regional and habitat differences in tardigrade fauna and the distribution of genera, subgenera, and species discussed; Scottish moss and lichen material containing, on average, the highest numbers of tardigrades per gram and displaying the greatest species diversity.
