Species Variation in Testicular Δ5-3β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Activity: Absence of Activity in Primate Leydig Cells

Abstract
The activity of Δ5-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase was studied in the testicular interstitial cells of 13 species, including 23 human and 2 monkey specimens. No activity could be demonstrated histochemically in the Leydig cells of human or monkey testes. Variations in the degree of activity visualized were present in the other species. No taxonomic correlation was possible. A5-3β- Hydroxysteroids, other than dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA), were used as additional substrates in the study of the primate material.
