Abstract
BILIRUBIN is a yellow tetrapyrrol derived from the catabolism of hemoglobin and secreted by the liver into the gut. For over a hundred years the characteristics and behavior of this bile pigment have been of abiding interest to both clinicians and research investigators. Since the beginning of this century, the physical and chemical properties of bilirubin and its derivatives have been elaborated through the work of Fischer, Siedel, Lemberg, Watson, Gray and others.
