Selective Portal Hypertension with Isolated Duodenojejunal Varices

Abstract
EXTRAHEPATIC obstruction of the portal venous system almost always involves primarily the portal vein, although extension of the process to the superior mesenteric vein has been observed. Thus, the uncommon occurrence of duodenal and jejunal varices has previously been described only in association with esophageal and gastric varices.1 2 3 4 In the case reported below, bleeding was from isolated jejunal varices caused by obstruction of the superior mesenteric vein in the presence of normal portal and splenic veins, a circumstance never previously recorded.
