Abstract
The fasting gastric contents of 6-rhesus macaques, equipped with chronic gastric fistulas and adapted to primate chairs, contained significant amounts of acid: pH = 1.9 [plus or minus] 0.5 ([plus or minus]SD), acid concentration = 49.2 [plus or minus] 31.6 meg/1, and acid output = 0.21 [plus or minus] 0.09 meq/30 min. Gastric contents sampled through the gastric fistulas of four unrestrained macaques in their home cages had similar mean values for pH (1.8) and acid concentration (41.8 meq/l). Fasting gastric secretion was markedly inhibited by intravenous injections of atropine ( > 12.5 [mu]g/kg) and by intravenous infusions of norepinephrine (1-3 [mu]g/kg perr min). The same doses of intravenous norepinephrine also inhibited gastric secretion produced by submaximal histamine stimulation. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
