Abstract
Soil factors affecting plant establishment on strip mine soils were examined. Soil pH was below 4.0 and Al concentrations averaged from 2.8-4.0 meq/100 g, levels considered toxic to plants. Transplant studies with Panicum clandestinum and Andropogon virginicus indicated that they could grow under these extreme conditions. In vegetated island areas with high litter content, establishment occurs readily even though soil pH conditions are similar to the unvegetated area. High soil temperatures and low soil moisture on the spoil inhibit germination and establishment of plants. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
