A survey of practice nurses in Northern Ireland: identifying education and training needs

Abstract
THE publication of Promoting Better Health in 1987, together with the introduction of the GP contract in 1990, marked an increase in the number of practice nurses. They are perceived as being recruited from a range of backgrounds and as having an undefined role. As a result it is necessary for supporting author ities to identify the education and training needs of practice nurses if the provision and purchase of courses are to be planned and delivered effectively. This paper reports on a survey undertaken in January 1992 of all practice nurses employed by GPs in the Northern Health and Social Services Board in North ern Ireland. It enabled the board to identify its own role and responsibilities in advancing health pro motion through practice nursing by meeting edu cation and training needs in the 1990s.
