Changes in Pituitary and Plasma Levels of LH and FSH After Cessation of Chronic Androgen Treatment12

Abstract
Specific bioassays of plasma and pituitary FSH [follicle-stimulating hormone] and LH [luteinizing hormone] levels show that the changes produced in castrated rats by 5-7 weeks of strong androgen treatment are not all reversed when treatment is discontinued. Plasma FSH levels rise sooner and more than plasma LH levels. Pituitary LH stores also rise, indicating increased LH synthesis. Pituitary FSH levels fail to fall, suggesting that the need for increased FSH release may be being met by de novo synthesis and that the high level of FSH activity in the pituitary of the androgen treated rat may represent non-mobilizable stores.
