Molecular Distribution and Elasticity in Crystals

Abstract
The well-known fluctuation-compressibility theorem for fluids is generalized to crystalline solids. It is pointed out that in anisotropic media, fluctuating local strains induce long-range pair correlations. The resulting anomalous contributions to the theorem's pair-correlation-function integral are related to certain components of an elastic tensor for the crystal. Detailed knowledge of particle-singlet and pair equilibrium distributions alone thus provides constraints on, but does not wholly determine, the solid's elastic constants.Keywords
