Abstract
The nucleon-nucleon potential from meson exchange is related to a matrix describing the scattering of virtual and real mesons by nucleons. This meson-nucleon scattering matrix is calculated for -wave mesons, using the model of Chew, which approximates experimental phase shifts for real mesons. The corrections to the and perturbation theory nuclear forces are evaluated. States involving the simultaneous existence of three or more mesons, none of which are absorbed by the same nucleon that emitted them, have been omitted in this treatment. Comparison of these and other results implies that this neglect is unjustified.
