THE EFFECTS OF UNILATERAL NEPHRECTOMY ON THE RENAL BLOOD FLOW AND OXYGEN CONSUMPTION OF UNANESTHETIZED DOGS

Abstract
The effects of uni-lateral nephrectomy on the renal blood flow and O consumption were detd. in unanesthetized dogs. Removal of 1 kidney was followed by a slowly progressive increase in the blood flow of the remaining kidney, somewhat more rapid in the 1st mo. than subsequently, and reaching approximately the combined flow of the 2 kidneys at the end of 3 mos. Nephrectomy was associated usually with very little alteration in the renal arteriovenous difference in O content. Alterations in renal O consumption usually paralleled changes in renal blood flow.
