Abstract
Antibodies to an intercellular substance of stratified squamous epithelium were detected by indirect immunofluorescent (IF) staining in the sera of eight out of 16 patients with pemphigus vulgaris. The autoantibody nature of these antibodies could be demonstrated by testing the patient's skin with the patient's own serum. The sera of three of six patients with chronic bullous dermatosis contained antibodies to a substance in the basement zone of the epidermis. By direct IF staining of biopsies, γglobulin was demonstrated in the intercellular areas of the epidermis of three patients with pemphigus vulgaris and in the basement zone of a patient with chronic bullous dermatosis. Intradermal injection of monkeys with human sera containing antibodies of the intercellular substance resulted in binding of γ-globulin to the intercellular substance of the epidermis. Keywords
