PURINE NUCLEOSIDE PHOSPHORYLASE ACTIVITY OF BLOOD. I. ERYTHROCYTES 1

Abstract
Purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) activity, similar to that of other animal tissues, was shown in the erythrocytes of man, dog, rabbit, pig, and chicken. The activity was greatest in the erythrocytes of man and the pig. Dog and chicken erythrocytes showed much less activity. Activity of rabbit erythrocytes was intermediate between that of these two groups. The PNP activity of dog erythrocytes was enhanced markedly following the production of acute anemia by the administration of phenylhydrazine or phlebotomy. Under similar circumstances no increase in PNP activity was noted in rabbit red cells. An increase in PNP activity was not seen in red cells from human blood in which the reticulocyte percentage was high.
