Abstract
The phenomenon of vibrations of the chest wall due to the activity of the heart is investigated utilizing a new approach. Measurements of 3 degrees of freedom of displacement over 3 different areas on the thorax are made on a small number of normal subjects. The method of measurement allows for the study of the separate translational movements along 3 different axes, with no significant mechanical coupling to the chest wall. It is demonstrated that the outputs along these different axes are comparable to one another in amplitude but are definitely not identical in information content. A method for mapping the displacements of the chest wall in this manner is suggested as an important step in gaining additional fundamental knowledge in this field. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
