Abstract
Multivariate discriminant analysis is shown to be a useful tool in delineating sedimentary environments on the basis of quantitative sediment properties. Size–frequency statistics calculated by moments provide environmental indicators for wave-lain and aeolian sands from Barnstaple Bay, England. Linear discriminant analysis proves useful in classifying sediments of unknown origin and of varied mineralogical composition.
