Abstract
The major sequences of symbiosis in fieldgrown vetch plants (Vicia sativa L.) are similar to those described in Part I of this series (Pate i958) for the field pea (Pisum arvense L.). In both species symbiotic development is found to be charac teristically synchronized with host plant leaf production and nitrogen accumulation. A generalized scheme for the symbiosis and nitrogen economy of the annual legume is derived from nodulation studies carried out in Australia and Northern Ireland.
