Abstract
The complanate S. lomentaria from Greenland has a direct type of life history in culture. Swarmers from the plurilocular sporangia on erect thalli germinate without copulation into sterile, knot filamentous, or ralfsioid prostrate systems independent of the photoperiod. New, erect thalli develop under cold (4.degree. C) and warm (15.degree. C) long day (LD) conditions. The erect thalli remain complanate under all conditions tested, and the absence of paraphyses seems to be a reliable character in this plant. This supports the justification for recognition of a separate species, S. complanatus. The cylindrical S. lomentaria from Greenland also has a direct type of life history. The prostrate systems are sterile and vary in morphology, but true ralfsioid thalli never develop. New, erect thalli develop under warm and cold LD, and under cold short day conditions. Keywords
