Abstract
We suggest the possibility of combining a momentum separator, consisting of a uniform magnetic field at right angles to a beam of particles, with a shaped absorber to obtain enhanced stopping rates. It is shown that by suitably shaping the magnetic field, one can obtain a form of linear focussing and derive the relevant equations for the magnetic field and absorber. Straggling is taken into account. We show that with certain (optimistic) assumptions the device could give three orders of magnitude improvement in stopping rates. Other problems are outlined, and finally we discuss what such a device could be used for. Keywords
