THE RENAL TUBULAR REABSORPTION OF CHLORIDE

Abstract
In a series of expts. on the dog, the renal tubular reabsorptive capacity for chloride was studied in relation to changes in the rate of glomerular filtration, functionally produced by the intraven. infusion of alanine. Changes in the rate of glomerular filtration are correlated with direct and nearly proportional changes in the capacity of the tubules to reabsorb chloride. Thus, when the chloride reabsorptive capacity is expressed as millimols of chloride reabsorbed from each 100 ml. of glomerular filtrate, this quantity remains nearly constant over a wide range of glomerular filtration rates. In this respect, the chloride reabsorptive mechanism resembles that for bicarbonate.
