THE EFFECT OF DIMETHYL SULPHOXIDE ON HEPATIC CELLS OF RATS

Abstract
Summary: The dipolar aprotic solvent dimethyl sulphoxide, although generally used in biology to preserve cells, is shown to be capable of producing morphological changes in hepatocytcs of the rat. These changes have features similar to those caused by other hepatotoxins. The damage due to dimethyl sulphoxide is not prevented by compounds stabilizing the cell membrane. The substance probably exerts its effect by alteration of the selective permeability of the cell membrane.
