Abstract
Histological examination of a badger (Meles meles) killed near Berne by accident, revealed the presence of mycosis of a submandibular lymph node. On the basis of morphological characteristics (shape, size, intracellular site and typical staining of the fungus elements), histo-plasmosis was diagnosed. This diagnosis was supported by staining of the fungus elements with fluorescent antibodies against Histoplasma capsulatum. Since the whole material was fixed, culture of the infective fungus was not possible. This is the first evidence for the possible occurrence of histoplasmosis in Switzerland. Based on the literature, the epidemiology of this fungus disease which has great importance especially in America, is briefly discussed. Keywords
