Abstract
The quantitative proportions of yeast (Y) and mycelial (M) cell mass in Candida albicans cultures in a defined substrate (Dubos medium) were studied by a specially developed filtration method since C. albicans was found to produce characteristic mycelial flocks in the medium. When yeast cells from the early growth stages of cultures in Sabouraud's dextrose broth were inoculated into this medium, they continued to multiply predominantly in the Y phase, whereas cells from the stationary stage largely converted into the M phase. The formation of mycelium was favoured by small inocula and by increasing concentrations of serum albumin, though the albumin was not measurably consumed. The flock-forming property of C. albicans was found useful in routine identification of isolates from clinical material. Keywords
