Abstract
15 alkyl nitrites were studied in the gaseous state in the infrared between 2 and 24 μ. The O‐N=O group is characterized by a very strong absorption in the 3 regions 1660,800 and 600 cm−1, corresponding to the N=O stretching, N‐O stretching and O‐N=O bending frequencies respectively. Rotational isomerism, already observed in methyl nitrite, appears to be a general property of organic nitrites. The influence of length, shape and kind of the carbon chain on the frequencies and intensities of the characteristic bands has been studied. Application to the diagnosis of primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols is suggested.
