Abstract
Several species of Lithospermum and other plants were assayed against pregnant mares'' serum (P.M.S.) gonadotrophin in vitro for antigonadotrophic activity. A few species of Lithospermum (L), Borago officinalis and Rubus idaeus possessed an appreciable amount of activity. An inhibiting substance present in some spp. of L. interferes with the in vitro reaction. The effect of seasonal variation on this activity in two spp. of L. was demonstrated. Storage of dried L. for a period of one year did not appreciably affect its activity in two out of three spp.; but when stored as an aqueous extract the activity rapidly disappeared.
