About a month ago, I presented, at a meeting of the Chicago Surgical Society, some preliminary reports of expermiental work I had been carrying out on the absorptive power of the pleura. Dr. Hedblom, who was present, thought that these notes might be of sufficient interest to read to you. While carrying on some experiments which had nothing to do with this present problem, I injected 1 c.c. of India ink into the pleural cavity of a number of dogs. When these dogs were necropsied some four days later, I was surprised to see that the pleural cavities were clear, and that, except for the black lines marking the intercostal lymph channels and the staining of the lymph channels on the diaphragm and the pigmentation of the mediastinal lymph nodes, no trace of the India ink was to be found.
