Abstract
The 1971 White House Conference on Aging defined four categories of needs of the aged: coping needs, expressive needs, contributive needs, and influence needs. Several state university programs are described, with reference to the manner in which they are attempting to meet these needs. Many institutions of higher education have refocused their thinking about education as a youth‐oriented enterprise, where the emphasis is on preparation for life, and have begun to see education as helping people continue to grow throughout their lives. Colleges and universities offer prime locations and mechanisms for drawing people together and providing information and guidance for the organization of educational programs. State universities in the next decade have the responsibility, the opportunity, and the challenge to provide programs for older adults. Keywords
