Flexural Stiffness of Sandwich Beams

Abstract
Two new theories have been developed for predicting the bending stiffness of sandwich beams. The first theory applies to the general case of any combination of skin and core while the second, but simpler, treatment may be used for shear-soft cores. The general theory also gives the shear stress between the skin and the core, together with the direct stress induced in the facings. Experimental results are given for a range of core materials and sandwich geometry including fiber reinforced plastics cross-ply laminates: excellent correlation is obtained with the predicted values.
