The electronic structure of the uranyl ion

Abstract
The low-temperature single-crystal optical absorption spectrum of Cs2UO2Cl4 is reported in six different polarizations. Measurements have also been made on the 18O compound. Zeeman-effect measurements are reported on selected lines. The portion of the spectrum between 20 000 cm-1 and 29 000 cm-1 is shown to contain 12 distinct electronic transitions. The symmetries of the excited states have been assigned.
