Contact Ulcer of the Larynx: Experimental Observations

Abstract
Among the organic diseases of the larynx, one ailment remains shrouded in obscurity. While the specific lesion of this entity is known to every laryngologist, even the name remains the subject of controversy. In North America we have adopted the name "contact ulcer," which was first used by Jackson5to designate this specific lesion—a unilateral or bilateral ulceration over the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage, with or without granulations. Many of our South American colleagues have followed this example. In several European countries, on the other hand, the same condition is described as "pachydermia laryngis,"14on the basis of Virchow's original pathological description. Other laryngologists in the United States and abroad prefer the term "granuloma" or "contact ulcer granuloma"11to designate the same clinical entity.
