Abstract
Corymorpha palma does not bud in nature, and simple smooth lateral cuts into the stem close rapidly without development of a new axis; but if small radiating cuts be made in the margins of such a cut, so that considerable growth results, a new axis develops, giving rise under normal conditions first to a hydranth, then a stem, and often inducing development of a basai end from the opposite lateral surface of the original stem. Under inhibiting conditions such a lateral wound may give rise to basal, instead of apical, structures.
