SPOROTRICHOSIS: A REPORT OF 12 CASES, INCLUDING TWO WITH SKELETAL INVOLVEMENT

Abstract
Twelve cases of infection with Sporotrichum schenckii are reviewed. In the majority of cases (83%) infection was limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Diagnosis in each case was readily established by the use of routine cultural techniques. Response to iodides was prompt and complete; stilbamidine and 2-hydroxystilbamidine were also effective and are considered the treatment of choice in cases with disseminated disease. Bone and joint involvement occurred in 17% of the present series of cases. Whenever infectious arthritis is suspected, the possibility of sporotrichosis or other fungus infections should be considered and investigated.
