Abstract
The industrialised world has changed enormously over the past 10 years, with rising unemployment a significant feature. Work is central to living, however, and we must create new job oppurtunities for the 21st Century. The challenge for Australia, now a “post‐industrial society”, is to create more service and information‐oriented jobs, especially since other nations are doing so. In the early 1950s Australia had one of the world's highest living standards with a handsome trade surplus, but now we have slipped. The blue collar labor force is in serious decline and we must protect the under‐educated so they are not swamped by technological change. Australia has been making a paradigm shift from the Lucky country to the Clever country ‐ although Intelligent country would be more appropriate. The most difficult changes needed in work patterns will be basically conceptual and cannot be enacted through legislation. Keywords
