Microstructure and mechanical properties of MEZ casting alloy

Abstract
The as-cast and the heat treated microstructures of MEZ casting alloy are characterized in detail, revealing the presence of intermetallic particles at grain boundaries and fine-scale precipitates in the matrix. The alloy showed a small age hardening response after a T6 heat treatment (1000 min. at 498 K), leading to a 23% increase in proof strength. A T5 heat treatment (360 min. at 488 K) showed no appreciable age hardening response, but resulted in a 15% increase in proof strength. This apparent anomaly is discussed, comparing macro-indentation and nanoindentation hardness test results.
