Abstract
In order to test the various theories of the Bordoni relaxation, single crystals of silver were deformed in ways designed to control the dislocation distribution. First, a crystal was deformed by bending, so as to generate mainly edge dislocations. In this case the Bordoni peak was absent, in spite of a maximum deformation of 7%. Second, crystals were deformed in tension into different stages of the stress-strain curve. The Bordoni peak was small and poorly defined for deformations in stage I of the stress-strain curve, developed fully in stage II, and decreased slowly during stage III. These results are best interpreted in terms of the Seeger-Paré-Alefeld theory in which thermally activated double-kink generation takes place at and above the temperature of the Bordoni relaxation with the aid of internal stress. Keywords
