Abstract
To the Editor: Investigators have suspected that deficiencies in the expression of la antigen may explain the observed defects in antigen presentation in patients with AIDS.1 2 3 However, our experiments involving one type of antigen-presenting cell, the monocyte, do not seem to bear out this suspicion. Our investigations indicate that the monocytes in patients with AIDS, though reduced in number, retain their Ia antigens. We studied the phenotypic expression of monocytes in 11 patients with AIDS, 12 patients with AIDS-related complex, and 10 hetero-sexual controls. Of the 11 patients with AIDS, 9 had opportunistic infections and the other 2 had Kaposi's . . .Keywords
