Abstract
The intake of energy and protein in five villages belonging to a farming community in the Sudan was measured using the 24‐hour recall method, as part of a study to assess their nutritional status. The average per capita per day protein intake was found to be adequate, but the average per capita per day energy intake was found to be deficient. The percentage satisfaction of the latter was 93. Food intake of the vulnerable groups was not related to food availability but determined by inequitable intra‐family distribution. This is postulated as a main factor in the ecology of childhood malnutrition which is prevalent in the area. Increased production of food crops in the area, together with an intensive nutrition education programme, are recommended. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
