Abstract
Hypersplenism, portal hypertension and traumatic rupture are the most common of the many indications for splenectomy. Confirmation of the diagnosis of hypersplenism by a competent hematologist is essential to insure good results. The indications for splenectomy, the preoperative, operative and postoperative problems, and special considerations in a series of 748 cases are presented. With proper preoperative diagnosis and preparation, elective removal of the spleen may be performed with low mortality and morbidity and without late ill effects. Keywords
