Abstract
The stream emergence trap described in this note collects the insects that emerge from an enclosed area of substrate. It will function at depths exceeding 12 cm and is designed so that as insects leave the enclosed substrate to emerge they are carried by the current to the downstream end of the trap where there is a quiet area in which they can emerge. The sampler proved particularly effective for collecting adult mayflies, caddisflies, and midges along with their cast exuviae. Major advantages of this emergence trap are that it can be emptied quickly and that the specimens are well suited to both taxonomic studies and studies of organism–substrate relationships.
